The Korean Intensive Education is a credit-based course for international undergraduate freshmen at Chonnam National University, designed to improve their Korean language skills and understanding of Korean culture.

International undergraduate freshmen with a TOPIK level below 4 are required to take this course for two semesters in their first year, focusing intensively on Korean related to daily and academic life.

  • Can accurately recognize the phonetic values of Korean phonemes by listening to words or phrases, and understand basic sentences.
  • Can understand formalized expressions and perform very simple communication (e.g., shopping, making appointments, planning daily activities).
  • Can understand basic Korean daily life culture and compare it with their own culture.

Korean Beginner 2
(Vocabulary·Reading)
  • Can correctly use vocabulary related to the names of objects, numbers, and positions.
  • Can understand and correctly use basic verbs related to daily life.
  • Can read and understand simple daily writings like diaries and letters.
  • Can read and gather information from simple practical texts like memos and receipts.

Korean Beginner 3
(Speaking)
  • Can pronounce the exact sounds of Korean by learning the Korean alphabet, syllable structure, and pronunciation rules.
  • Can use basic expressions needed for daily life, including names of objects, characters, and time.
  • Can engage in conversations on familiar daily topics.

Korean Beginner 4
(Grammar·Writing)
  • Can write Korean accurately by learning the Korean alphabet, syllable structure, and pronunciation rules.
  • Can perform basic language functions on daily life topics by practicing target grammar.
  • Can write short texts on daily life topics using target grammar.

2nd Semester Korean Intermediate 1
(Listening)
  • Can listen to and understand stories related to familiar topics like habits, dating, shapes of objects, accidents, housing, and repairs.
  • Can express thoughts and opinions about what they have heard.

Korean Intermediate 2
(Vocabulary·Reading)
  • Can know and use vocabulary needed for daily life related to habits, cooking, dating, anniversaries, gatherings and attire, accidents, housing, and repairs.
  • Can read and understand texts such as announcements, introductions, instructions, news, columns, and newspaper articles on familiar social topics, and can write about related experiences or thoughts.

Korean Intermediate 3
(Speaking)
  • Can develop language skills related to familiar social topics and functions, and perform speaking functions needed for basic social life like delivering information, explaining habits, checking weather information, evaluating products, recalling dating processes, and conveying rumors.

Korean Intermediate 4
(Grammar·Writing)
  • Can learn the grammar needed to perform functions related to familiar social topics, and develop grammar usage skills through reading, speaking, and writing practice.
  • Can write about various social topics.
